The initiative called Green Grids Initiative – One Sun One World One Grid aims to unite stakeholders in governments and businesses to eventually provide universal access to sustainable energy
The UK and India joined hands at COP26 on Tuesday to launch a new grids initiative. The Green Grids Initiative – One Sun One World One Grid (GGI-OSOWOG) aims to boost interconnected electricity grids across the world, and provide easier energy access to the poor through mini-grids and off-grid solutions. The initiative combines the UK Green Grids Initiative with India’s One Sun One World One Grid (OSOWOG) programme.
The GGI-OSOWOG aims to unite global energy grid stakeholders, including governments and businesses, to accelerate the expansion of energy grids, with the eventual goal being universal access to sustainable energy. The launch of this initiative was first agreed as part of the 2030 Roadmap for India-UK future relations in May 2021.
“The UK is working hand in hand with our friends in India to transform the future of the power sector and ensure clean and reliable electricity is accessible everywhere by the end of this decade,” said Boris Johnson, UK Prime Minister.
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the time has come for ideas such as these two Initiatives. “If the world has to move to a clean and green future, these interconnected transnational grids are going to be critical solutions.”
